Smart LED street lighting in the village of Penthéréaz
The new LED urban street lighting system in Penthéréaz is now intelligently controlled, maximizing energy savings and minimizing power consumption
Penthéréaz is a Swiss municipality in the Canton of Vaud, located in the Gros-de-Vaud district. As its public lighting system had become outdated, the municipality decided to modernize the installation by switching to LED lighting. The objective was to find a modern luminaire with a design that would blend seamlessly into a rural Vaudois village setting. In addition, the municipality wanted to implement a remote lighting management system that would reduce energy costs and light pollution while ensuring the safety of its residents.
The FLEXIA QUERCUS luminaire was quickly selected for the project. This versatile model brings a touch of nature to the heart of the village of Penthéréaz. Moreover, it is a DarkSky Approved luminaire and is available with various connectivity options (NEMA or Zhaga) compliant with the ZD4i standard, as well as sensors and the FlexiWhite solution, which adjusts the lighting’s colour temperature according to the needs of the space and the time of day.

The municipality of Penthéréaz selected Schréder EXEDRA to manage its new LED urban street lighting system, which is now intelligently controlled to maximize energy savings and minimize power consumption.
Schréder EXEDRA is one of the most advanced lighting management systems on the market, enabling users to control, monitor, and analyze street lighting networks through an intuitive and user-friendly interface. The platform is built on open and shared technologies, allowing seamless vertical and horizontal IoT integrations and providing a future-proof solution for smart city applications.
To provide lighting that best meets users' expectations, four streets were operated using different lighting control scenarios, allowing residents to evaluate and choose the most suitable option. Following these trials, it was decided to dim the street lighting to 40% output until 10:00 p.m. and then to 20% until sunrise. This configuration delivers energy savings of more than 70% compared to lighting operating at 100% output throughout the night.
For safety reasons, pedestrian crossings remain illuminated at 100% all night long, ensuring optimal visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
As clearly shown in this graph generated from Schréder EXEDRA, it is possible to schedule specific lighting profiles in advance based on dates or events. In this example, a temporary street lighting shutdown was programmed and successfully carried out during the Perseid meteor shower on 12 August 2024. This feature allows municipalities to adapt lighting operation to special occasions, helping to reduce light pollution while enabling residents and visitors to better enjoy nighttime events such as astronomical observations.
